LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus  A forest fire broke out in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)'s coastal city of Girne on Sunday, as heat waves continued to grip the island. The fire occurred in forestland in the Tepebasi district, and TRNC's Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said the fire was taken under control to a large extent. Turkey sent three firefighting helicopters to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Vice President Fuat Oktay said. Oktay also said Turkey closely observes the situation, stressing that it supports the TRNC with all its institutions, particularly the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry. Through the UN, two air vehicles from the Greek Cypriot administration took turns in helping put out the fire, said Kudret Ozersay, the foreign minister of the TRNC.

ANKARA The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) may be the first country in the world that does not have any new coronavirus case since April 20, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.  Kudret Ozersay, the foreign minister of the TRNC, sent a letter to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the country’s successful fight against the pandemic. As of May 8, the TRNC only had 108 cases with a death toll standing at four, and rest of the positive cases have recovered, Ozersay, who is also the deputy prime minister, said in the letter. Underlining that the country started ending its lockdown in “a phased and vigilant manner” as of May 4, he said it was the outcome of the dedication of the TRNC government, timely decisions and measures to stem the spread of the virus, which were dedicatedly abided by the people. Turkish Cypriots were warned on Friday that anyone out in public without a mask would be fined  or even jailed for up to one year, after a ‘cabinet’ decision decreed mandatory use. The decision was taken on Thursday and came into effect on Friday. In total 108 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the north while four have died. No new cases were detected for the past few days. Turkish Cypriot police on Friday issued an announcement calling on people to follow the rules. They said that as part of the measures, wearing a mask in public was obligatory. This includes people going for shopping but also those working in direct contact with the public such as shops, pharmacies, hospitals, petrol stations and banks. Those found without one, will be subject to a fine, equivalent to 10 per cent of the minimum wage in the north, around €54, or up to a year in jail.
